I should know better than to read books written by ‘Instagram sensations’。 They too often lack any real depth and that’s the unfortunate case here。 Dion Baker’s art and typography are stunningly gorgeous, but you can see that for free on her Instagram account。 The text, while interesting in spots, was neither particularly inspirational nor instructive。

Just what I needed while I try to revive my sketchbook practice---lots of inspiration。

This is a lovely little book with beautiful illustrations。 As I'm a bit more experienced, it was more a window into another artists practice than a guide, but still valuable and inspiring。 If you are a beginner, this book is a good mix of tips and guidelines, as well as personal stories about the practice of daily drawing。 This is a lovely little book with beautiful illustrations。 As I'm a bit more experienced, it was more a window into another artists practice than a guide, but still valuable and inspiring。 If you are a beginner, this book is a good mix of tips and guidelines, as well as personal stories about the practice of daily drawing。 。。。more

Very accessible, easy guide to get started doodling and create a sketch journal。 Some helpful tips, though this is focused not so much on 'how to draw' but the logistics around 'how to start a drawing journal'。 Very accessible, easy guide to get started doodling and create a sketch journal。 Some helpful tips, though this is focused not so much on 'how to draw' but the logistics around 'how to start a drawing journal'。 。。。more

I have been noticing many students turning to pen and paper lately since we went online。 It’s a nice break from screen time。 I started a weekly sketch your day office hour for students and this book helped inspire ideas for us。 It’s been amazing seeing who comes to office hour and what they’ve drawn。 I may extend it to all my classes at some point。 This novel gives examples of pages from the author。 It gives suggestions for what to draw, how to draw it and what supplies you’ll need。 If you’ve ev I have been noticing many students turning to pen and paper lately since we went online。 It’s a nice break from screen time。 I started a weekly sketch your day office hour for students and this book helped inspire ideas for us。 It’s been amazing seeing who comes to office hour and what they’ve drawn。 I may extend it to all my classes at some point。 This novel gives examples of pages from the author。 It gives suggestions for what to draw, how to draw it and what supplies you’ll need。 If you’ve ever been wanted to get started on sketching, this would be the perfect book to use。 I got the ebook。 While I don’t know if my art will ever progress or if I will start to sketch my day every day, I still loved this little bundle of inspiration。 。。。more

I have a weird feeling about this book。 I think it is tied to the fact that I got before the big lockdown in late spring。 I had just come back from a trip。 I was starting to explore art journaling。 I can't really draw but writing was getting 'tiresome'。 So I ordered this book because I liked some of the art journaling that I saw on youtube and thought, "I want to try that。"It came in and then the lockdowns began like a domino effect。 Reading it felt like a reminder of what I couldn't do。 Anyway, I have a weird feeling about this book。 I think it is tied to the fact that I got before the big lockdown in late spring。 I had just come back from a trip。 I was starting to explore art journaling。 I can't really draw but writing was getting 'tiresome'。 So I ordered this book because I liked some of the art journaling that I saw on youtube and thought, "I want to try that。"It came in and then the lockdowns began like a domino effect。 Reading it felt like a reminder of what I couldn't do。 Anyway, I started reading it again and my feelings are still a little weird。 It is very NYC in vibe so I don't quite connect there。 However, the getting started section is good and I did get ideas from the inspiration chapter。 So while I have found a few other similar books a bit easier to connect to, there is information in this little book that I do find worthwhile and that makes me glad I got it。 。。。more

I started sketching this year and found it very soothing。 It is inspiring to see an image and try your hand in drawing, seeing all the lines come together to form a picture。 It is also inspiring to see the world around you and depict it on paper。 Draw you Day is an inspiring how-to manual for creating and maintaining a sketch journal。 The author shares her own strategies and daily process for art journaling。 The examples are plentiful and varied, and the narrative is well organized and informati I started sketching this year and found it very soothing。 It is inspiring to see an image and try your hand in drawing, seeing all the lines come together to form a picture。 It is also inspiring to see the world around you and depict it on paper。 Draw you Day is an inspiring how-to manual for creating and maintaining a sketch journal。 The author shares her own strategies and daily process for art journaling。 The examples are plentiful and varied, and the narrative is well organized and informative。Highly recommended for anyone interested in developing a daily sketching practice。This book is ideal for those individuals who already have a drawing practice and want to develop it further or want to try out a different way of creatively structuring their art activities。 。。。more

I love to look at art journals。 I dream of being outside, pulling out my sketchbook, and drawing what I experience。 But I have no idea how to get started。Draw Your Day is, of course, illustrated with pages from Dion Baker’s own journals。 I love her style。She tells a little about her own life, and how she first started journaling, and how over time the artwork disappeared from her journals。 She missed the drawing, and needed to purposely reinstate it into her life。I really appreciate her discussi I love to look at art journals。 I dream of being outside, pulling out my sketchbook, and drawing what I experience。 But I have no idea how to get started。Draw Your Day is, of course, illustrated with pages from Dion Baker’s own journals。 I love her style。She tells a little about her own life, and how she first started journaling, and how over time the artwork disappeared from her journals。 She missed the drawing, and needed to purposely reinstate it into her life。I really appreciate her discussion of tools。 She explains the numbering system for pencils, which I really never understood before。 She recommends certain brands of art supplies, some pricey and some not, and explains the reasons behind her choices。But most of all, she explains how to make a sketch journal part of your daily routine。 She suggests multiple ways to use one, and leaves it up to you to come up with your best way to adopt the sketchbook habit。 I love this book, and I can’t wait to make sketching a daily part of my life。 。。。more

If you're into stuff like this, you can read the full review。Daily Routine: "Draw Your Day - An Inspiring Guide to Keeping a Sketch Journal" by Samantha Dion BakerI’ve always wondered how long it takes to create a habit。 I'm learning sketching and committed to 4 hours a day。 Many days later I've only missed one day。 I'd say the habit was established by about that amount of days。 I picked up running 30 years ago and I reckon it took 10 weeks before I was feeling the full benefits and felt like I If you're into stuff like this, you can read the full review。Daily Routine: "Draw Your Day - An Inspiring Guide to Keeping a Sketch Journal" by Samantha Dion BakerI’ve always wondered how long it takes to create a habit。 I'm learning sketching and committed to 4 hours a day。 Many days later I've only missed one day。 I'd say the habit was established by about that amount of days。 I picked up running 30 years ago and I reckon it took 10 weeks before I was feeling the full benefits and felt like I wanted to run。 。。。more

What was inspiring for me were the illustrations, not the narrative, but I think they were few。 I still had to check out Samantha Dion Baker's Instagram for more。 I love her style though。 She's a pro but her works are warm and friendly。 What was inspiring for me were the illustrations, not the narrative, but I think they were few。 I still had to check out Samantha Dion Baker's Instagram for more。 I love her style though。 She's a pro but her works are warm and friendly。 。。。more

What this book is about is clearly defined by the title。 I've followed the author's Instagram for a couple of years, and find her artwork inspiring。 This book wasn't exactly what I was expecting。 I enjoying flipping through her lovely illustrated journal pages, but the text and how to wasn't as inspiring as I'd expected。 This isn't a book I'd recommend for beginners, but if you already keep a journal and want some inspiration, you might like it too。 What this book is about is clearly defined by the title。 I've followed the author's Instagram for a couple of years, and find her artwork inspiring。 This book wasn't exactly what I was expecting。 I enjoying flipping through her lovely illustrated journal pages, but the text and how to wasn't as inspiring as I'd expected。 This isn't a book I'd recommend for beginners, but if you already keep a journal and want some inspiration, you might like it too。 。。。more

Inspiring book with lots of lovely journal pages for inspiration。 This is a little different from Urban sketching as the pages are more planned。 The only thing I wished for was to know how the author approached gathering images for drawing later。 A couple times she mentions taking reference photos, but that didn't satisfy my curiosity about who she goes about capturing the images she puts in our sketch journal。 Inspiring book with lots of lovely journal pages for inspiration。 This is a little different from Urban sketching as the pages are more planned。 The only thing I wished for was to know how the author approached gathering images for drawing later。 A couple times she mentions taking reference photos, but that didn't satisfy my curiosity about who she goes about capturing the images she puts in our sketch journal。 。。。more

Such an inspirational book。 Helpful ideas and advice for drawing a journal。 I’m overwhelmed with the possibilities - which was the author’s stated goal which she certainly achieved with me。 I very much enjoying savoring this book。

I've always loved to keep memories, but for a while I have been frustrated by the fact that I haven't been able to keep up with it。 I've also been frustrated because I haven't been drawing enough。While I have tried different styles of journalling, I always feel like I am behind in one or another (keeping memories or drawing)。 When I saw Samantha's book I fell in love with the idea of keeping a drawing diary。 Coming from an architecture background, I fully identify with her personal experience: " I've always loved to keep memories, but for a while I have been frustrated by the fact that I haven't been able to keep up with it。 I've also been frustrated because I haven't been drawing enough。While I have tried different styles of journalling, I always feel like I am behind in one or another (keeping memories or drawing)。 When I saw Samantha's book I fell in love with the idea of keeping a drawing diary。 Coming from an architecture background, I fully identify with her personal experience: "Months turned into years, and eventually I felt as I could no longer draw。 I had spent more than eighteen years working as a graphic designer, and one day I realised that I was desperate for a cretive outlet free from computer screens and technology" (pg 2)In my case, after 15 years studying and writing in postgraduate studies and then academia。 I have recently realised that art in my left was left from 'when there was time for it'。 Largely when I was travelling and visiting cities。 I need more art in my life。This is not a step-by-step sketch book, but the illustrations are beautiful and Samantha has a motivating way of sharing her journey。 I definitely recommend this book for lovers of art, drawing and memories。 。。。more
